Another neighbor set free from Amerigas!

We would like to welcome another homeowner to our NC Discount Propane savings group who just established Amerigas did not own her tank as they had claimed!

She was an Amerigas customer/victim, and Amerigas claimed they owned her below-ground 500/gal tank, which prevented her from receiving delivery of our savings group propane for around two dollars per gallon this year. But when Amerigas (which has let many of their customers run out of propane in the last few years) demanded she pay more than $3 per gallon for propane this year, she used our tank ownership challenge letter template to determine if Amerigas truly owned the tank as they claimed. She now owns her tank and apparently has for some time now without knowing it.

At first, Amerigas responded to the challenge letter by offering to sell her the tank for $900+ dollars which is far too much for a tank that has been underground for more than 15 years! Amerigas also sent her a copy of her tank rental agreement she signed, but close inspection of that document found no proof showing Amerigas owned the tank or has paid taxes on the tank, or kept up any paperwork at the county courthouse on the tank. When she pressed further, demanding that Amerigas only communicate with her in writing (not by phone) and demanded they prove ownership or quit, Amerigas then released control of the tank for free and even refunded her $160 in tank rental fees they wrongfully charged her last year! We now how have proof that Amerigas, and perhaps other companies like Suburban, will offer to sell tanks they don't own to consumers who do not fully challenge their ownership in writing. Amerigas is such a terrible company that there is a Facebook page full of dissatisfied customers you should review called

Amerigas Consumer Complaints at

We are not attorneys, and this is not legal advice. We are propane consumers trying to help others obtain propane for more reasonable prices through our propane co-op NCdiscountPropane.com However, it appears that many times companies like Suburban and Amerigas tell consumers their company own the tanks in order to force them to pay very high propane prices ($4-$5/gal) ., but when challenged via letters sent certified mail with a signature required, many of our propane savings group members have taken control of their tanks for only the cost of the letter they sent. If anyone would like a copy of our propane tank ownership challenge letter, please email Bill@ncdiscountpropane.com for a copy that might help you determine if your propane company really does own the tank and can prove it or if they are just telling you that to make you pay their high prices.
